Vocational Pathway

As pupils progress from Key Stage 3 into Key Stage 4, they have important decisions to make in terms of subject choice. Some pupils will follow our general pathway, which is based on mainly traditional GCSEs. An alternative option is our Vocational pathway which is delivered in partnership with SRC within the Newry & Mourne Area Learning Community. Pupils who choose this course will study a combination of GCSEs. We believe that the subjects on offer in this pathway give a broad range of experience across the curriculum to enable pupils to make more informed choices at the end of Key Stage 4.

This pathway offers the traditional GCSE subjects that are compulsory for all students such as Maths, English, Science, ICT and Learning for Life and Work. Pupils will also choose a further GCSE from an options block.

Pupils also choose two Occupational Studies courses at Level 2. These are the equivalent of 2 GCSEs at the end of Key Stage 4 and are delivered by SRC. Pupils are provided with the opportunity to ‘taste’ vocational-related fields in a specialist environment. Pupils can progress after GCSEs to NVQ Levels 1, 2 and 3 on entering the world of work. Depending on the occupational area you are interested in you could be employed as a secretary, administrative assistant, construction worker, Health Care Assistant, engineer, in a bank, the post office, crèche or nursery, the leisure industry, agriculture and so on.

In the Vocational Pathway you will study:

• English Language (GCSE/Essential Skills)
• Mathematics (GCSE/Essential Skills)
• Religious Education (Non-Exam)
• Physical Education (Non-Exam)
• Science
• Careers (Non-Exam)
